CASA PUERTA AZUL
Accommodates 2 to 5 persons in 2+ plus bedrooms, with extra guest sleeping space in the library and formal living room
An enchanting house with multiple gardens, designed by the architect-owner for discriminating travelers who want to feel enveloped by traditional Mexican charm. This is a house that offers tranquility and private spaces, even for a large family or several friends vacationing together. It is NOT a house for those looking for high-tech living…it is deliberately and artistically low-tech, but still contains the modern amenities of a washer and dryer, 6 burner stove and fully equipped kitchen. It IS a house that is comfortable and at the same time romantic throughout. There are wood burning fireplaces in the great room (combination kitchen, dining and family room), in the formal living room and in the library.

Enter Casa Puerta Azul through an old-fashioned wooden door that once belonged to a country farmhouse – the lintel is low, so duck your head…and then stand up straight to a beautifully proportioned high-ceilinged entry hall with benches for your packages and hooks for coats – and you are looking into the first of several garden areas. To your left is a raised pavilion with a dipping pool and fountain…to the right is the library (not filled with books as it turns out, but with the owner’s whimsical collection of antique toy banks). The library has a comfortable sofa which folds out to a queen sized bed as needed – and a charming corner fireplace. The double-glazed French windows face onto the quiet cobble-stoned street. As you leave the library you may continue onto the covered verandah or walk on the landscaped path straight ahead to the wonderful plantings and a small cascada which pools into yet another fountain…as you step up to the verandah you enter the “great room”, the kitchen/dining/family living room. Art and books collected from Mexico and around the world line the walls and bookshelves in this room. Next door is the ground floor bedroom and bath and an adjoining smaller bedroom/dressing room with a single bed. There is a large bathroom in this wing of the house, complete with oversized shower.

The great room overlooks a trellised terrace with outdoor seating for al fresco dining, games-playing – or just plain relaxing – and this faces another garden area, a green lawn surrounded with plants and flowers and dotted throughout with interesting sculptures and yet another fountain. The path through this garden leads to the casita containing the “formal” living room of the house – with large fireplace, sofas and chairs conversationally placed. This room is filled with art, sculptures, books, and a sound system (which is also duplicated in the great room) – and has a full view of the garden. There is an extra large curving tub and shower in the full bath adjoining the living room plus an enormous storage closet which contains, among many other household supplies, a couple of foldaway beds, in case there are extra guests visiting.

The master bedroom suite on the second floor of the house can be reached by three separate stairways – one an interior spiral staircase in the library, another stairway just off the dipping pool – and a third stairway to the left off the verandah where the great room is located. On the second floor the owner has built a large light-filled master bedroom with king sized bed and a beautifully tiled bath with shower and deep soaking tub…just off the master bedroom and bath is a balcony terrace that leads to the art studio – a haven for any artist or writer – on the other side of the studio is a plant and sculpture filled sala or covered terrace, perfect for sunset watching…comfortable seating, and a hammock invite you to enjoy many lazy hours on this upper terrace.
