On entering from the street, the corbelled, 20-foot high entrance corridor gives out into the lovely front patio surrounded by brilliant bougainvilleas and a long reflecting pool, sporting 24 spouts along its edges. To the left of the patio is the heart of the house: the living room, dining room and kitchen, and one guest bedroom and bath, and to the right of the reflecting pool, are a guest bath, a “chapel” with a loft bedroom with two twin beds and bath, and another guest bedroom with a king bed. At the back of the patio is a Guadalupe fountain, and also quiet outside sitting area, shaded by an arbor of bougainvilleas…
The commodious kitchen, overlooking the street, is a tribute to the culinary gods of Old Mexico! From the high ceiling, graced with wooden beams, corbels and skylights, to the floor and counter tops fitted with 8 different kinds of ceramic tile in magical patterns, to the elaborate cabinets in the nichos filled with all kinds of hand-made pottery, the kitchen looks like it did two centuries ago… But on closer examination, you see a thoroughly-modern refrigerator, 5 gas burners on the central island, and inside the cabinets, modern cookware, flatware for 16, assorted kitchen utensils, etc. The sinks are made of “cantera” (a local limestone) but the faucets, unlike years ago, contain purified water!! The kitchen is dazzling during the day, but at night, cleverly-hidden lights turn it into a fantasy-land.
In the dining room, you will find a hand-sculpted fireplace, with its gracious guardian, the Virgin of Guadalupe above. The room comfortably sits 8 to 10 people at its black and white calf-skin covered table and chairs, a reminder that San Miguel—in fact, all of Guanajuato State—was cattle-raising territory, equivalent to the US’s Wild West! In the wooden chests around the dining room, you will find all the linens, serving bowls and dishes to accommodate 12 family members and guests.
The living room—here called a “sala”—has couches and chairs to watch TV (or movie on the DVD) or enjoy each others’ company by the fireplace… There is an arched glass window and door onto the entrance patio, and a door in to the guest bedroom and bath and one to the dining room/kitchen.
