CASA SANTA ANA |

The first owners of Casa Santa Ana were once hosts to the famous (some say "infamous") Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón (21 February 1794 – 21 June 1876) during his astounding ELEVEN "terms" as president of Mexico (some as short as 3 weeks) in the 22 tumulously years from 1833 to 1855.* The grand entry of Casa Santa Ana leads you into the interior patio, restored under the watchful eye of Timoteo Wachter, a local landscape architect... The old stones arches and spacious portals that define the colonial architecture in San Miguel welcomes you to the expansive dining room with its 20-feet high ceilings, antique wooden table with seating for eight guests, and a fireplace surrounded by deluxe chairs. Across one end of the garden is the oldest room on the house: the art-filled living room with its 250-year-old tile floor... Many indoor and outdoor comfortable seating areas beckon you, for quiet conversations or peaceful reading venues. The spacious master suite on the second floor features a classic book-lined library with a grand fireplace bracketed between luxurious leather couches. Double-paned windows let daylight in yet ensure a silent view of the busy street below. Beyond a double door, lies the four-poster, queen-sized canopy bed, and an ensuite bathroom with over-sized tub for two. On the other side of the library, one bookcase reveals a hidden doorway into another bedroom, with a double bed... There is another suite with sitting room, queen-sized bed, walk-in closet, with ensuite bathroom with tub... and yet another suite with king-sized bed, walk-in closets and ensuite bathroom with over-sized tub... AND for an extra special treat, try the glassed-in rooftop bedroom, with the most beautiful view of La Parroquia and San Francisco Church, and the endlessly fascinating sky with or without clouds... And the terrace has indoor/outdoor bar, to entertain your friends and relatives with drinks and grilling as the sun sets on one of the most historical and glamorous homes in San Miguel... The Casa Santa Ana Staff (most of which have years of experience): Andres, the majordomo and man-Friday, speaks English, and is a repairman, par excellence... Leonor, the cook, prepares and serves the most delicious Mexican dishes. She is available to prepare breakfast and, for extra money, the midday comida and special parties... Arturo, the gardener, keeps the patio plants green and flowering... and Patricia, is the housekeeper and laundress... She is available for personal laundress, also... * For a resume of Lopez de Santa Anna's escapades, including defeat of the Texans at the Battle of the Alamo, his other exploits against the US invasion of Mexico and in the fight for Mexican independence, his exile in Cuba, and Staten Island, NY, his prosthetic cork leg (which is, to this day, a resident of Springfield, IL), and his role in the popularization of chewing gum in the US and the ever-popular Chiclets, see the write-up on Wikipedia. |
